Boruca Owl - Slingshot

The Boruca Indigenous Slingshot is still used today and resembles the traditional style slingshot most hunters around the world recognize. Typically, Borucan hunters would just cut down a small sabling tree with a natural fork in it to use to make the slingshot.

Though Boruca Indigenous today have moved more towards farming and fishing for food, there is still a passion for all things outdoors. Hunting larger game in Costa Rica has been largely forbidden and all hunting is illegal for most Costa Ricans. However, Indigenous have limited rights to hunt on their ancestral land for survival. This new reality for indigenous hunters has given rise to the use of primitive projectile weapons like the slingshot that is easy to carry, silent, accurate, and practical for small game.

It is carved from cedar wood, which is also a common tree in their area and sustainable source of wood. During the day, these artisans spend a lot of time carving intrinsic masks and other art reflecting their ancient cultures. This slingshot allows the artisan to combine both their artistic skills with their passion and unique styles of hunting.

Caution: This Slingshot is intended for DECORATION USE ONLY and not meant for practical use. These slingshots are hand carved from soft cedar wood that is subject to break from intensive use. Even though our beautifully carved slingshots have functional slings and are capable of projecting ammo, they are NOT made for shooting. These slingshots make excellent decorative pieces but should be kept OUT OF REACH from Children at all times.
